So much has happened since my last post...where to begin? I've re-established contact with an old boyfriend that I hadn't spoken to for 13 yrs. We were together for 7 yrs and it ended very dramatically...broken hearts, rebounds and that...then silence for yrs. Time passed...marriages came and went...numerous relocations. I think we both carried around the wound of "not knowing"...it was a subtle constant ache for me. So it is very liberating to be chatting with someone that basically grew up with me...the person that taught me there is a thing called "unconditional love". So a weight has been lifted...and all is well.

The recent healing of old wounds has reminded me of old books, movies and music from those days. Here's an all-time favorite song and video...dedicated to Mr. Lucky and our days in KCMO...when we fancied ourselves "John and Exene". So it goes...

Being raised in the heart of the bible belt, I've been exposed to many a "jesus freak". In fact, my granny used to dress me and my sister up on Sundays and take us to the Assembly of God church where she taught Sunday school. If you are at all familiar with the Assembly of God churches...you know they are a Pentecostal church that believes in laying on of hands and speaking in tongues (yes...like that scene in Borat). Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker preached for Assembly of God...and as I'm sure many of you know...they had a popular televangelist group/TV show in the 70's and 80's called PTL Club. My granny LOVED Jim and Tammy...I watched many hours of PTL club programming in my formative years...and my granny gave far too much of her money to help build Heritage USA. We all know how that story ended...if for some reason you missed the news in the mid-80's...just follow the links I have included to get up to speed. So, getting to the point of this post...I'm completely addicted to the new reality show on Sundance..."One Punk Under God", about Jim and Tammy's son, Jay. Jay is trying to drag the evangelical church closer to the year 2007. He is extremely liberal, supports gay marriage and even holds church services in bars. This may seem very trendy, but for tons of folks in the Midwest and South, that are still living in some stunted, mythic/membership, fundamentalist bubble...he could actually help move them forward a tiny step on evolution's road to reason.

Sorry for the lack of posts...I have a bit of Spring/Summer fever at the moment. Anyway...I saw Yoko Ono in Soho a few weeks ago. Since then I haven't been able to stop thinking about John and Yoko's appearances on The Dick Cavett Show from the early 70's. I've always loved those episodes and they are now available on DVD...so I've been watching them again this week. I love John's sense of humor, their chain smoking, their honesty, their politics and their hand-holding. John even gives props to Jerry Lee! I saw re-runs of the episodes for the first time on late-night television when I was around 11 or 12 and they had a huge impact on me at the time. I have always felt that they had the ideal relationship...the kind that most people are searching for...soul mates and collaborators.

Since I'm on vacation this week...we bar-hopped after the Monkeys gig last night and ended up at Death Disco at the Annex. DJ legend BP Fallon was spinning great soul classics...I highly recommend his Wednesday nights. I woke up this morning to check his website...and this is what I read about last night:

Carl Barat hopped off the plane from London at JFK, popped into The Roseland Ballroom to dig Arctic Monkeys and then high-tailed it to Death Disco New York to DJ up a storm. Boppin' Barat opened with The Fabs and Paul's shout of "One, two, three, fuh!" into I Saw Her Standing There before slapping on Brown Sugar by The Stones and Carl leaping about behind the decks as is everyone else on the dancefloor and from then on in it's something of a kaliediscopic blur, adventures in the ozone laced with rock'n'roll and bright young things and another bright young Thing doing the boogaloo and the shimmy shimmy shake and the let's-twitch-awhile... or something.

DAMN! We must have shown up right as they left! Mr. Hallam had sent me a txt saying he had seen DPT the night before in Sheffield. How could I have missed seeing Carl DJ in a space the size of my living room! I am crying...

Went to see Art School Confidential this weekend...only worth seeing if you were an art major. It is loaded with "art school profiling"...and the rest of the plot isn't meaty enough to keep you entertained.

One of the sub-plots follows a former art student that has become a serial killer...I kept wondering if Daniel Clowes was inspired by Bob Berdella...who attended my alma mater, KCAI.

I've been thinking about drugs lately...not taking drugs...but what a recurring theme they have been in my life. Especially considering that I have never been a drug user. I have watched while people that I loved destroyed themselves with drugs and drink. It is so painful and you feel so powerless...then you just feel angry. Angry because these people are pissing their lives away...because in my experience they are amazing, interesting, talented people full of potential. One of the most painful things you can ever experience is loving an addict.

It is also really confusing to me...if you are already dissatisfied with your life and have a desire to numb yourself...why use something that you KNOW is going to fuck up your situation even more. This might sound harsh but if you wanna die...blow your brains out...don't choose the wimpy long-term suicide plan. If you want to live then get your shit together and start making changes. Becoming an addict is like choosing to live in some kinda fucked up limbo...and drag other people with you...emotionally. It is a heartbreaking thing to watch. It's not sexy or cool...it's fucking boring and predictable...and it's always the same...

Before I get into today's post I wanted to mention that the Archie Bronson Outfit post boasts the most downloaded tracks on this blog. Which means you must love them as much as I do! I promise to include frequent ABO updates.

Speaking of ABO...listening to them reminded me of an all-time favorite...The Gun Club. The Gun Club came out of the early '80's L.A. punk scene. The same "cowpunk" scene that spawned X and The Blasters and that was beginning to reveal hints of the No-Depression movement that would flower more than 10 years later. Their punk-blues has been described as "Howling Wolf backed by the Cramps" and has influenced bands like Pixies, The Whites Stripes, 16 Horsepower, Nick Cave and Queens of the Stone Age. Their first album Fire of Love is an absolute must-have...trust me! It includes a cover of Son House's "Preaching The Blues" that is brilliant! Front-man Jeffrey Lee Pierce was truly one-of-a-kind...R.I.P.

I pulled myself away from work long enough to make it to the Arctic Monkeys gig last night. Really amazing! I can easily say that I had the best time I've had since moving to NY. The Monkeys are true rock stars now...such little boys!

I was "adopted" by a group of boys from Leeds and then a group from Sheffield. They were by far the most entertaining bunch at the gig...dancing and singing every word at the top of their lungs. Great fun! True to form...I spent the evening with the most charming 23 yr old Sheffield lad who seemed to have a well-established Louise Wener fetish left over from childhood. Went to bed at 6:30am...out with the boys tonight as well...am planning my "summer vacation to Sheffield" itinerary. I hope a tour of the cutlery factory is not on the agenda!

One more post before I head back to work...Geraud and I went to the Whitney Biennial this afternoon. There is the usual pretentiousness…but overall I would say the show is worth the money. Don’t miss Anne Collier’s photographs, Paul Chan’s video installation and Francesco Vezzoli’s hilarious movie trailer for the fictitious re-make of Caligula featuring Courtney Love.

I have included a few of Anne Collier’s photographs to whet your appetite…but you really must see her work in person to appreciate the nuances. She is definitely a new favorite!

Everyone has defining moments in their lives…one of those defining moments for me was the first time I heard the band X.

I had a “rock & roll” childhood… my parents introduced me to the Beatles, the Who, The Byrds, Hendrix…their combined record collections were a history of 60's and 70's rock. I also spent a great deal of time with my paternal grandparents who introduced me to Elvis, old-school country & western, american folk, bluegrass and traditional pentecostal hymns. When I began to develop my own tastes I favored punk and new wave. I felt torn between three musical worlds that didn’t seem to have a common thread. Then I heard X…and they brought those three worlds together for me. X combined punk, rockabilly, blues and country with off-kilter vocal harmonies and poetic lyrics written by singers John Doe and Exene Cervenka. Their music helped lay the foundation for the alt-country movement that started to blossom in the 1990's.

I am including a clip of X’s 1983 appearance on Letterman. They perform “Hot House” and “Breathless” (Jerry Lee Lewis cover). Keep in mind that “Billie Jean” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart” topped the charts in 1983... this clip gives you a sense of how far ahead of their time they really were.

Fun-facts-to-know-and-tell:
After John and Exene divorced, she was married to Viggo Mortenson of LOTR fame.
X’s first four albums were produced by Ray Manzarek from the Doors.

I have a long-running obsession with Kiki de Montparnasse, Man Ray’s muse. I can remember the first time I saw one of his photographs of her. I was dumb-struck. She is not a classic beauty but there is something about her that is mesmerizing yet completely ordinary. She was an artist in her own right…as well as a cabaret performer.

Speaking of cabaret…another one of my obsessions…I’ve been listening to Man Man repetitively for the past month. They are a strange mix of Tom Waits, cabaret, circus music, dixieland, Nick Cave and Captain Beefheart. They are great fun…and what is life without a bit of fun?

I FINALLY sold the car that’s been sitting in Missouri for the past 10 months. Hallelujah! It will be nice to no longer make a payment on a car that I am not using...another reason to love New York.

Speaking of cars, Leo has been explaining the various blog add-ons and modifications that are available. Just as I would never have an underbody light kit or a rear spoiler on my car, I would never have a rolling ticker or time and temperature on my blog. I prefer to keep things simple and understated. I did add a counter which freaks me out a bit because it takes the blog into a creepy quantitative space. When people are reduced to numbers I feel a bit squeamish. I may remove it if it continues to haunt me.

I love Wolfmother! The part of me that loves Wolfmother is the same part that saw AC/DC live when I was 16. The same part of me that used to love to park on gravel roads with the Pohlman brothers and drink beer while listening to Rainbow. The Pohlman brothers were the two “dirt-heads” in my high school. They were blond versions of John Bender from The Breakfast Club and they lived in a trailer with their Mom on the edge of town. The only furniture in the trailer was a sofa, a kitchen table, a big screen TV and 3 beds….and a huge “Houses of the Holy” wall tapestry…in the living room. I loved sitting at their kitchen table talking about music. It was so great to find two people that listened to something besides "hair bands" in my hometown in the late 80’s. They couldn’t relate to my Smiths/Clash/X-loving side but they knew who Ritchie Blackmore was…that was enough for me.

My previous posts have been on the serious side…time to lighten things up a bit with a more personal post: My sister and I inherited a love for younger men from our trail-blazing Mother. Mom was rockin’ it “Demi-style” way back in the day. In fact, she married a 19 yr. old when she was 33. Following in my Mother’s footsteps, I have a difficult time dating men over the age of 26. BUT…I am 35 and I need to begin taking that area of my life a bit more seriously. Lately I have been attempting to date “older men” and by older I mean over 40. Great! Right? Not an easy task for me! Recently I went on a date with a 41 yr. old. Very nice, attractive enough, really smart, had been in numerous indie bands, great job. Sounds great! Not so fast…half way through the date the 25 yr. old bartender slipped me his number which of course offended my date a bit. My date ended up leaving early...I stayed. Enough said.

So that is my current Apollonian/Dionysian dilemma…
